Problem: Traditional insulating mortar products including homemade mixes made with vermiculite and/or perlite don’t hold up to temperature changes over time.  Building codes often specify special refractory mortar to ensure the integrity of the installation at higher temperatures, but many of the insulating mortar products on the market don’t meet these requirements.  Regular cement or mortar found in most mortar mixes resists temperatures up to 600-800 degrees Fahrenheit, but as temperatures cool, the strength of the mortar diminishes and can deteriorate. Residential installations operate well in excess of 800 degrees Fahrenheit.

Solution: Insul Stick® and Insul Cast® refractory insulating mortar meet code requirements and hold up to extreme temperature changes.

Insul Stick  dry mix is a masonry repair and restoration product that is ideal for smooth parging over firebrick in the fireplace smoke chamber.  Combining insulating value and strength, Insul Stick meets ASTM E-136 requirements for sealing wall penetrations for utility passthrough. Available in a one-gallon or 30-lb pail, with a density of 60 lbs per cubic foot, this versatile compound can be cast, parged, troweled or sprayed. For more information or to order, click here.

Insul Cast Delta Crete is available in a 50-lb bag dry mix with a density of 50 lbs per cubic foot.  It may be poured or toweled in place, and can be used for backup insulating in any masonry application.  It is ideal for insulating bread and pizza ovens.
